Fred's Last Day...
at WSGA - July 24th 1971

30 years of broadcast history

A few months ago former Goodtimer Fred Holland found the website and sent me an email. A few weeks later Fred sent along a package with a bunch of WSGA, WBYG, WAPE and WTOC surveys and stuff.

The elephant picture of Peter Garrett came from the Fred collection. Also the picture of Bruce Lapp came from a 1970 "140 top 40" survey Fred has held onto all these years.

Fred also sent me two cassette tapes. The one you see on the page contained a few minutes  of the Jerry Rogers show from the summer of 1971.
I was working weekends that summer and took over the all night shift when Fred Holland joined the Army. On Fred's last day in town Danny Kramer threw a going away  party. At 5:45pm Danny called JR and went on the air.

The other cassette from Fred contains an interview with Jimmy Carter, then running for his first term as Georgia Governor. This was taped at Pinky's on Drayton street .

I'll post the Jimmy Carter interview later in the week but for now I have some stuff that just happened to be on the same tape.

Sounds like Fred made a tape of WAPE off the air and then was dubbing to a second cassette to grab the jingles. Well surviving to this day are a few minutes of afternoon drive with Honest John and a fragment of the Dan's Dusty discs oldies show.  A little WPDQ slips in towards 5:00pm and then the tape features some 1970 vintage CBers listening for a breaker.
