WNEX Macon 1400

The WNEX transmitter building

I don't know if I have any sound at all from WNEX. I think I may have a copy or two of the Ozzie and Lyndy Breakfast broadcast, but that was way late in the evolution of this classic Top40 station.

What I do have are some great pictures and info on the technical side of the station's history. The first pictures I'm putting up were taken in December of 2000.

The building burned down a few years ago and the frequency was dark for awhile. Nowadays the 1400 frequency is filled with the sounds of Disney, still broadcasting from the shores of beautiful Lake Lowe.

The Lowe family owned an early television station in Macon, and one of the first FM stations too.

Both those stations were economic failures and left the air many years ago.

Up until a few years ago the FM antenna was still mounted on the top of the tall WNEX tower. More on that later.

I worked for Al Lowe in the late 80's. The station was all but forgotten by listeners and Al's business plan seemed to centered around running commercials based on the fact that he hadn't been told not to. The bills went out, enough folks paid.

My broadcast strategy for the morning show took advantage of the reality that only cops and cabbies still were without FM radio in their cars in 1987. I played Clarence Carter's "Patches" at least three times a week as a testament to the power of the American spirit, that and a barking dog were my trademarks. A far cry from the days when the little 1000 watt AM  kicked the crap out of all the market had to offer.

Lake Lowe.

Ever wonder why a 1400khz AM station would have such a TALL tower?

The front door was right behind where Ozzie is sitting.
